What happens when we slow down enough to listen to water, clay, pigment and the landscapes that shape them?

The Creative Materials Lab is an ongoing exploration led by Yanis Zagorianakos & Marina Coriolano-Lykourezos through which we investigate the relationship between materials, landscape and the creative process.

At the center of this work lies a long-term dialogue between water, clay, pigment, ink, ash to name a few of the materials we use. Rather than treating materials simply as tools for making art, the lab approaches them as living elements whose behaviour can be observed, understood and explored.

Water plays a central role in this process. It carries pigment across paper, softens clay, binds earth with ash, reveals how form emerges through movement and flow. Through attentive work with these materials, participants gradually develop a deeper sensitivity to how the elements interact and how this understanding can deepen both perception and creative practice.

One part of this research takes the form of a workshop called Whispering Waters, which focuses specifically on the role of water in the creative process and in the interaction between materials. The exhibition Whispering Waters, which will be presented in Athens, April 16-25, takes its name from this workshop and presents works that emerged through this exploration.

Within the Creative Materials Lab we organise immersive workshops called Field Sessions.

Field Sessions are 5–10 day gatherings that combine creative exploration with landscape immersion.

Rather than focusing on producing finished artworks, these sessions invite participants to explore the dialogue between materials, landscape and the elements that shape them.

Each day follows a simple rhythm.

The morning begins with around two hours of theory and shared discussion, offering guidance on how to understand and connect with materials—particularly water—and how to approach the creative process through observation, experimentation and attention.

After a break for contemplation, the group goes on a nearby walk or hike, coming into contact with the surrounding landscape directly: sea, rivers, stone, trees, wind, light... These encounters are an essential part of the process, allowing participants to reconnect with the elements before returning to the studio work.

The rest of the day is dedicated to creative exploration, working with combinations of water, pigments, inks, clay, earth and elements that participants may have found in their outings. Through mixing, drawing, shaping and observing the process, participants explore how materials respond to different conditions and how form and fluidity interact.

The aim of these sessions is simple:

slow down - listen carefully - explore materials and landscape - allow creativity and perception to expand through shared experience.

Field Sessions take place throughout the year in different parts and landscapes of Greece, each offering a unique environment and relationship with the elements.

The annual cycle includes:

April /May — Evia
June /July — Kalavrita
September — Amorgos

Monthly field sessions throughout the year - Aegina, where we live and have our studio

Sessions include accommodation, food, creative materials and local transportation, with typical participation costs ranging between €500 and €2,500 per person, for 5-10 days depending on location, accommodation options and travel arrangements.

Field Sessions variy depending on location and group composition. Practical details are shared personally with participants after they express interest.

Monthly Creative Materials Lab in Aegina

Available to book 2026 & 2027

Monthly sessions are 6 days long. They take place on the island of Aegina, where we explore the dialogue between water, clay, pigment and landscape through theory, observation and hands on experimentation.

These gatherings follow the same rhythm as described above and are open to anyone who would like to experience the work while discovering the island of Aegina.

Field Sessions on the Road

Available to book for 2027

Field Sessions are 5–10 day immersive gatherings that take place four times a year in different landscapes across Greece, including the islands of Amorgos and Evia and the mountainous towns of Kalavrita.

Sessions vary depending on location, accommodation and group composition, so full details about travel arrangements and costs are shared personally.

If this exploration resonates with you, you are welcome to join the Creative Materials Lab interest list, and we will be in touch to explain upcoming sessions.

Who the Creative Materials Lab Field Sessions Are For

These gatherings are open to anyone who feels curious about exploring creativity through materials, landscape and the elements. They are suitable for artists, designers, writers, researchers, educators or simply people who wish to reconnect with creative exploration in a slower and more attentive way.

No particular technical skill is required. What matters most is toe come laden with curiousity, openness and a willingness to experiment.

The Creative Lab may resonate especially with people interested in:

the relationship between the elements: water, earth, fire & air;
creativity as a process of observation and dialogue, rather than production;
connecting creative practice with landscape and environment;
slowing down and developing a deeper sensitivity to materials and perception.

Participants may come alone, as a couple or as a small group. Sessions are intentionally small, and tend to attract people who enjoy learning collaboratively, sharing ideas and exploring materials together in a supportive environment.
