Shape & Decorate - Bucchero Firing

All our workshops are open to everyone above 18 years old.

No previous experience is needed, only curiosity and the desire to create.

What to expect

Join marina on the beautiful island of Aegina, Greece to explore your creativity through clay and play.

Breathe. Loosen your shoulders. Free your hands.

All you need to bring with you is your curiosity, an open mind & heart. A swim suit and walking shoes too!

In this particular workshop, we will create black pieces using the ancient, Greek technique, later known as Bucchero in Roman times, which requires only one firing. For this we will be burnishing our pieces, using stones and other tools as well as Terra Sigilata. The pieces are then fired in a reduction kiln. In this way, we will concentrate mainly on the shape of our pieces and decoration by impressing elements we will have picked up from nature and scratching, since there will be no colours other than black, some greys and the occasional silver flashes.

We will first spend some time exploring the clay, get familiar with it as well as with the environment in which we are, that is the island of Aegina. We will plan a visit to a local clay pit. In ancient times, Aegina was known for its water jugs that kept the water cool and fresh, which were made with this very clay. It is with this in mind that we will each think of what kind of containers we would like to create. We will also explore nature around and pick elements from it to use as inspiration and/ or elements to create decoration on our pieces.

Back in the studio, we will explore and play with the local clay as well as studio clays. We will start making our pieces with a mixture of pinch pot, coiling and slab techniques, using low firing red clay. We will try different decorative methods, using what we will have found in nature, as well as scratching techniques: sgraffito and champ-levé, which will be able to apply on our creations. Finally, we will fire our pieces.

This workshop is tailored for both beginners and people with experience. It is a creative journey into the expressive world of clay. It is not so much about learning new techniques, which of course may happen, but more about spending with and giving time to our creative potential using clay, while in a groups, sharing and exchanging ideas and moments. By the end of the workshop you will have your own, small production of everyday objects to take back home with you, filled with memories of your creative week on Aegina where creativity met fun, pleasure and relaxation.

Groups are intentionally small: we usually run our retreats with anything between 1 to 8 participants. In this way, workshops remain intimate and everyone gets full attention. We have created a safe and supportive space where you can freely explore and experiment, make mistakes and learn without fear of judgement. We ask you to respect and honour this space so that each one's expression and creativity can be met. You will have full access to our equipped ceramics studio, where inspiration flows and imagination is encouraged.

The programme in more detail

We have a full 8 hour day, which more or less breaks into 3.5 hours in the morning, 3.5 hours in the afternoon & 1 hour lunch break. The programme is always elastic to allow for organic changes and needs that may occur.

Saturday early evening: welcome meeting and introductions at the studio.

Sunday: Morning excursion to the two areas where we can dig wild clay. As well as getting clay we will pick up shards, leaves, rocks, tree barks, flowers and whatever else inspires us to impress onto the clay.

Lunch out. Afternoon at the studio to make small tests with different wild and studio clays.

Monday - Wednesday: All day at the studio, getting our hands dirty, trying all three basic hand building techniques: pinch, coil, slab. We will use our findings from the first day to impress onto clay, creating decorations. We will burnish our pieces with terra sigilata as well as stones. We will also use the sgraffito techniques for more decoration once the pieces have been burnished. By the end of Wednesday our pieces will be ready.

Lunch at the studio.

Thursday: Kiln loading after final touches and details. PIeces are wrapped in paper, put in hte metal box, which is then sealed with a mixture of clays and ash.

Lunch at the studio. Free afternoon

Friday: Morning visit to the Arhaeological Museum of Aegina.

Lunch out. Free afternoon.

Friday early evening OR Saturday morning: We open the kiln, welcome all surprises and discuss the results.

You can choose to pack your pieces and take them with you, or we can ship them on your behalf.

"Working with clay is a meditative activity: time disappears and we are called to be in harmony with it. It is with this meditative approach that I would like to guide you through this workshop, whether you are new, or not, to clay. Working with clay is about listening. Listening to what is happening right here and now as we hold it in our hands: from wedging all the way through to shaping it into a final piece. The possibilities are many. It is a question of dialogue between you and the clay, what you want to create, what it allows you to do. It requires our full presence and the conscious awareness of each breath and gesture, and the imprints they will leave on it. The dialogue continues until we have found not perfection but harmony, the balance that makes everything look just right."

About marina

marina coriolano-lykourezos was born in London of a nomad Brazilian mother and a Greek father. She grew up in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. She studied Art History & Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She has worked in publishing and production, as a translator and a curator, on many independent projects in the realms of arts & crafts, and has collaborated with the Athens Photo Festival for many years. She had the gallery space cats&marbles in Athens between 2004 and 2009. She came to Greece in 1999 and landed in Aegina in 2012 somewhat by chance, with her partner Yanis Zagorianakos, chemist turned artist-artisan. They moved to Aegina in 2012, where they have been living since. Together they created The Cool Projects in 2013, and in 2023 launched Aegina Retreats. Their studio is a lively space, open to all, where they also organize events and exhibitions and welcome collaborations.

marina was introduced to the realm of ceramics through her mentor and dear friend, ceramicist Theodora Chorafas. She spent 5 years in her teacher’s studio until she finally set up her own space in November 2023, where she continues her research in the world of clay of low and high temperature, insisting on single firing. She has developed a special love for simple, everyday objects, looking to find that “magic” harmony between aesthetics and functionality, which creates their identity.
