Shape & Decorate

Exploring Ceramics

Creative Writing &Ceramics

In this workshop, we will start from the very basics and put emphasis on the creative process through shape. We will make terracotta pieces that will be fired black. Sounds like magic? It is in a way. The method is ancient and simple though. You will be introduced to the basic handbuilding techniques, making shapes of your own choice: we will start with making pinch pots, the perfect method to explore the various clays we will play with, then move onto to coil and slab building. You will also learn various methods of burnishing, and decorate by scratching, which creates a beautiful contrast between shining and mat surfaces.

In our creative flow workshops we give more importance to the process of creativity than the result. We provide each participant in the group a safe, judgement-free space in our fully equipped studio, so that you can work in a relaxed and inspiring environment. We explore clay as well as the creative process, working on establishing a constructive dialogue with our chosen material. We also go through the basic handbuilding techniques to help you make the pieces that appear in your hands and before your eyes. Each workshop is somewhat different as it is interactive. Our aim: to (re)connect with our creativity through clay.

Once a year, marina joins Maud Vidal-Naquet, french writer and owner of L'Etincelle - Voyager, Ecrire, S'Epanouir. Together they take you around the island, make you discover some of its most beautiful corners, its mythology. They take you on walks and swims, museum and temple visits, help you choose your meals... so that you can find the essence of the island. You will write in various settings under Maud's guidance and fun exercises, while marina will open her studio and help you create your clay plates, bowls, cups. Words and Clay will meet and possibly become one. By the end of the workshop you will have objects imbedded with your experience in Aegina to take back home with you.

What to expect

Join marina on the beautiful island of Aegina, Greece to explore your creativity through clay and play.

All you need to bring with you is your curiosity, an open mind & heart. A swim suit and walking shoes too!

And so that you know, no previous experience is needed.

Groups are intentionally small: we usually run our retreats with anything between 1 to 6 participants. In this way, workshops remain intimate and everyone gets full attention. We have created a safe and supportive space where you can freely explore and experiment, make mistakes and learn without fear of judgement. We ask you to respect and honour this space so that each one's expression and creativity can be met. You will have full access to our equipped ceramics studio, where inspiration flows and imagination is encouraged.

The workshop is hands on: we start by exploring Aegina and its local clays. We visit two of the areas where traditional potters used to pick their clay from, as well as explore nature and pick elements to inspire our work. The rest of the week we work in the studio, prepare the wild clay and get our hands dirty. We continue our exploration using studio clays, and play with them through a series of exercises to familiarise ourselves with their various qualities. All throughout, marina will talk to you about the properties and varieties of clays, the basics on slips and glazes if necessary, offering a foundation for experimentation and giving space for unexpected discoveries to appear while creating pieces free from judgement. The basic aim is to dive into the creative process with clay as our medium.

Days are full: we start between 9:30 and 10 am with a 3-4 hour session.

After our lunch break, we have another 3 hour session. Once the kiln is on we visit the Archaeological Museum and more of the island, and you get some free time.

"Working with clay is a meditative activity, and it is with this meditative approach that I will guide you, whether you are new, or not, to clay. I will show you how to listen to clay, to what is happening right here and now as we hold it in our hand, as we shape it, as we look at our pieces in the making. The possibilities are many: it is a question of an open and honest dialogue between you and the clay, what you want to create, what it allows you to do. It requires our full presence and conscious awareness. The dialogue continues until we have found harmony rather than perfection - the balance that makes everything look just right."

About marina

marina coriolano-lykourezos was born in London of a nomad Brazilian mother and a Greek father. She grew up in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. She studied Art History & Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She has worked in publishing and production, as a translator and a curator, on many independent projects in the realms of arts & crafts, and has collaborated with the Athens Photo Festival for many years. She had the gallery space cats&marbles in Athens between 2004 and 2009. She came to Greece in 1999 and landed in Aegina in 2012 somewhat by chance, with her partner Yanis Zagorianakos, chemist turned artist-artisan. They moved to Aegina in 2012, where they have been living since. Together they created The Cool Projects in 2013, and in 2023 launched Aegina Retreats. Their studio is a lively space, open to all, where they also organize events and exhibitions and welcome collaborations.

marina was introduced to the realm of ceramics through her mentor and dear friend, ceramicist Theodora Chorafas. She spent 5 years in her teacher’s studio until she finally set up her own space in November 2023, where she continues her research in the world of clay of low and high temperature, insisting on single firing. She has developed a special love for simple, everyday objects, looking to find that “magic” harmony between aesthetics and functionality, which creates their identity.

Reviews

I had a wonderful experience at this pottery retreat! Marina is such a patient and thoughtful teacher—you’ll be amazed at how much you can learn in just one week. From picking your own clay to practicing slab and pinch techniques, every step was hands-on and inspiring. And of course, enjoying the famous pistachios of Aegina made it even more special. I can highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in clay, creativity, and a truly unique cultural experience!

I took part in the Shape and Decorate ceramics course with Marina and had a truly inspiring and memorable week. The studio is a beautiful and inspiring place to work. Marina shared her deep knowledge with openness and patience, and was always happy to answer questions. Her calm and friendly way of teaching really made the experience special.
I am very grateful for this wonderful week and left full of ideas and with a great sense of joy and creative energy.

Miriam, July 2025

I felt disconnected from my creativity and wanted deeper inspiration with new techniques.

The location, Marina's experience and the opportunity to create ceramics I'd not tried before.

I created a variety of pinch pots and thrown pots using the clay we had picked from an Aegina clay pit directly. Amazing experience!

Marina is a kind, generous and knowledgeable host and teacher. The whole week was incredible and so nourishing.

Excellent retreat. I'd love to go back to do more.
