Aegina Retreats
All our workshops are open to everyone above 18 years old.
No previous experience is needed, only curiosity and the desire to create.
Join Yanis on the beautiful island of Aegina, Greece and jump into this unique opportunity to explore
your creative potential through painting.
All we want of you is a genuine desire to create and express yourself through paint. No previous experience or artistic training is needed.
Groups are intentionally small, running with as little as 1 and as many as 8 participants. In this way, workshops remain intimate and everyone gets full attention. We have created a safe and supportive space where you can freely experiment, make mistakes and learn without fear of judgement. Each one of you will have full access to our equipped painting studio, where inspiration flows easily and imagination is encouraged.
Throughout the course, you willl take part in both theory and practice sessions focused on creativity, painting, design, composition, colour theory and the creative flow.
You will be guided step by step through the creative process, learning how to access, sustain and expand your creativity through painting. We’ll experiment with different materials and approaches, helping you find your own expressive voice and rhythm. We do not focus on any specific techniques but instead we value the process.
Theory sessions typically run from 10:00 to 14:00 daily.
For the rest of the day we run an open studio, where you can concentrate on your personal practice.
In his workshops, Yanis welcomes:
Beginners who want to start painting but don’t know where to begin.
Artists seeking a fresh approach or a new environment.
Creative explorers who paint for pleasure but feel stuck or curious to go deeper.
Whether you are rediscovering your creativity or expanding your artistic expression, these workshops/ retreat offer the perfect setting to paint, play and grow.

Fluid Creativity Painting & Butoh Intensive.
A transformative 6-day residential workshop that explores fluid creativity through the complementary practices of Expressive Painting and Butoh dancing. You will unlearn rigid creative habits and discover a playful, imaginative state where painting and dancing move freely through your body, breath and soul. This is not about mastering techniques, it is about letting go, surrendering to the currents and revealing the creative depths within.
Through the dual practice of painting and Butoh Dancing you will dive into the mysteries of fluid creativity, express emotions, and find guidance to expand.
Listening Waters is a combined practice, bringing together Whispering Waters Fluid Creativity by Yanis and Presence & Embodiment work by Rani.
Together, these two approaches form a shared creative field shaped by water and listening.
It is not about technique, performance, or learning something new. It is about forgetting and remembering. Forgetting what no longer serves the creative process. Remembering how creativity moves when it is not forced.
At the centre of this experience is water — not as a theme or metaphor, but as an active intelligence that teaches through rhythm, movement, stillness, and responsiveness. Water is not observed. Water is listened to.
This is not an art or painting road trip. It is not about style, results, or learning how to make “better” paintings.
This is a slow journey through landscape, water, and living craft — an exploration of creativity as a natural process rather than a personal achievement.
We travel from Athens to Amfissa, a working town beneath Mount Parnassus, surrounded by ancient olive groves and still shaped by traditional making. Along the way, we step away from speed, accumulation, and image-making, and enter a different rhythm of attention.
Creativity here is approached the way nature operates:
through repetition, trial and error, responsiveness, and time.

Yanis Zagorianakos
Yanis’s fascination with water began during his university years, when he first became interested in its hidden properties. Since then, water has remained central to both his personal exploration and creative practice.
He has spent years reading, researching, and reflecting—drawing from scientific studies as well as ancient texts—in an effort to understand the subtle intelligence of water and its role in connecting all living things. In his artistic work, water has become both subject and collaborator, guiding rhythm, movement, stillness, and chance.
This retreat is the culmination of that long exploration: an immersive experience that brings together art, awareness, and the wisdom of flow. It invites participants to reconnect with their own creative current through movement, presence, and attention.
Yanis Zagorianakos (YZagor) is a self-taught, full-time craftsman and painter with a BSc in Industrial Chemistry and Design from City University London. Born in Athens, he grew up between Athens, Johannesburg, and London.
After 15 years working as a project scientist and designer, he left scientific research and began travelling extensively in India, where he was introduced to arts and crafts. Over the following decade, he studied a wide range of crafts and painting practices while working full-time as an artist.
He now lives and works between the Greek islands of Aegina and Amorgos. His practice spans wood, metal, fabric, watercolours, acrylics, oxidations, collage, and mixed media, guided by curiosity, experimentation, and the role of chance.
For Yanis, process is as important as outcome. Creativity is something to be entered, not controlled.

Yanis has failed many times, for different reasons both in work and in life. This is what he considers his main source of education.
Reviews
I love The Cool Projects! Yannis was a fantastic teacher. Although I don't have much experience painting, I found the course a useful lens for the creative process and really enjoyed time in the studio. Marina & Yannis were wonderful hosts, lunches were delicious and we were invited to feel at home. I spent a memorable week here and highly recommend The Cool Projects for anyone who wants to explore the creative process, painting or simply as an excuse for a slower pace of life for a while.
Brigitte Small, 2025
I attended a very special workshop created by Yanis, set in a beautiful and peaceful environment on the island of Aegina. Yanis was very patient and attentive to my needs for learning from his approach to the creative process involved in painting/drawing/creating. He was able to fit a lot in a short amount of time without there being any pressure. I felt very much at home, with a warm and friendly welcome from Yanis and his partner Marina, their dog and cats and delicious food! Everything had a touch of care and love, nourishing the soul and mind. A source of inspiration that stays with you.
Rani Khanna, 2025
What an experience! Yanis shared his wisdom and skills, and introduced me to the world of seeing without judgment, letting go, and going with the flow. Vedic Art opened a new perspective for me. I can highly recommend it to anyone who dares to surrender – you are in safe hands 😀. Many thanks as well to Marina for her hospitality and to India for the warm daily welcome. I would love to come back.

All courses focus on the creative process rather than on artistic technique. What distinguishes them is their approach.
Vedic Art Course
Created by Curt Källman, this method is based on the 17 Principles of Art and Life. It is a fully intuitive, free-expression approach with no instruction on technique, colour theory, or drawing. The process encourages raw, spontaneous creativity and carries a spiritual dimension.
Beyond the Intellect
Developed by Yanis Zagorianakos, this course draws on artistic principles inspired by Kandinsky’s theories. It guides participants through the creative process while also offering basic technical instruction in drawing and colour theory it is more about the process than it is about technique.
Whispering Waters-Fluid Creativity
Also created by Yanis , this course follows a process similar to Beyond the Intellect but goes further by introducing the concept of “fluid creativity” and offering a way to tune in to the process.

Beyond the intellect into flowing creativity through painting
Design, composition, colour theory, delight in painting
Formats: 7-day retreat / 3-day weekend / Online (5 sessions)
“One way ticket to flowing creativity”
Come join Yanis on the island of Aegina, Greece, in this unique opportunity to explore your creative potential through painting.
This 7 day workshop is open to everyone above 18 years old. No previous experience, knowledge or skill is necessary except the desire to be creative and paint.
The workshop is limited to a group of 3-10 participants at a time. It takes place in a bubble of safety and security within which we are free to express, learn and make all the mistakes we want. The bubble serves as an invisible protective layer keeping all kinds of judgement out while creating the necessary conditions for creativity to flow freely and unperturbed.
During the week, you will be guided through theory sessions and practice on painting and how to access your creativity, keep it flowing and expand it. Theory sessions usually take place between 10:00 to 14:00. The rest of the time you are free to use as you like. The studio is available for practice 24/7.
One day will be dedicated to exploring the island: we will take a road trip to draw inspiration and connect with nature.
This workshop will take you through the creative process and how to access it with your painting. We will explore our basic tools for painting, different techniques and materials.
This workshop is open to everyone who likes painting, wether a beginner or an artist; to those who may be used to painting or want to try but haven't done so yet for various reasons; to artists who want to work on their own projects with another approach or in a different setting. It is for all of you who paint regularly for pleasure but feel stuck or blocked or curious or looking for something more.
Whispering Waters-Fluid Creativity: Tuning In
It is not about technique, it is more about the process and a method to tune in.
Formats: 7-day retreat / 3-day weekend / Online (5 sessions)
Method created by Yanis Zagorianakos (all rights reserved)
Most people imagine creativity as something you produce. You sit down at a desk, pick up a brush, and push an idea into existence. The blank page is seen as a battlefield where you must fight until you win. In this model, creativity is tied to force, pressure, and sometimes struggle.
Fluid creativity offers another way. Instead of hammering out a product, creativity is seen as a stream already flowing through life. Just as a river moves downhill without being commanded, creativity moves naturally when you stop trying to control it.
You are not the “author” of creativity — you are the riverbed through which it runs. The paint, the brush, the water are all expressions of the current. You don’t have to force them. They already know how to move.
Think of cooking soup. If you over-season, stir constantly, or try to rush the simmer, the flavors get muddled. But if you allow the pot to quietly bubble, the ingredients blend on their own, and the soup finds its flavor. Creativity is like that — it is not imposed, but revealed when given space.
This workshop explores the creative process through the lens of painting, using painting as both metaphor and medium. While the focus is on visual art, the principles we explore apply to all creative practices.
We’re often told to “get into the flow” — to create from a place of openness and movement — but what does that really mean? Over the past 35 years, as a craftsman, artist, and scientist, I’ve explored this question deeply. What I offer here is not a fixed method, but a personal synthesis: insights drawn from the works and theories of many creative minds, combined with my own lived experience.
Together, we’ll enter a kind of alternative reality shaped by the nature of story telling. We’ll use it as a metaphor and a guide to understand how creativity works, how we relate to our tools, and how we engage with the world around us.
This workshop is not about mastering techniques. It’s more about letting go, unlearning, or even pretending — stepping into a playful, imaginative state where creativity can move freely and naturally.
This workshop is open to everyone who likes painting, wether a beginner or an artist; to those who may be used to painting or want to try but haven't done so yet for various reasons; to artists who want to work on their own projects with another approach or in a different setting.
